At the invitation of the National Archives of the Republic of Uzbekistan, I was in Tashkent recently for discussions with Ulugbek Yusupov, Director of the Uzarchiv Agency, and his team. Uzarchiv is Uzbekistan’s umbrella organization for the National Archives, to which all archives in the country report.
I was deeply impressed by many things, including:

The overwhelming hospitality. A quote from my hosts: “Guests are sent by God and should be treated accordingly.”

The advanced state of digitization and metadata creation, as well as the intensity with which this work is being carried out. I was able to observe this in every archive I visited, incl. National Archive and several of its departments, the National Library and the Tashkent University of Information Technologies.

The impressive testimonies of a history spanning several millennia in architecture, literature, religion, culture, and national identity—and how these are preserved and cared for. I enjoyed the absolutely well done tours a lot.

The concept of the Mahalla communities and their practical implementation. This is quite familiar with our beliefs and hope for a society living peacefully together.

From a culinary perspective, Uzbekistan is definitely a highlight.

Der fortgeschrittene Status von Digitalisierung und Metadatenerstellung sowie die Intensität mit der daran gearbeitet wird. Das konnte ich in jedem der Archive, die ich besucht habe, beobachten.

Die beeindruckenden Zeugnisse einer mehrtausendjährigen Geschichte in Architektur, Literatur, Religion, Kultur und nationaler Identität und wie diese erhalten und gepflegt werden.

In our discussions, we identified many commonalities and shared interests. We talked about possibilities for cooperation and exchanged ideas that we will continue to develop. I am looking forward to the next conversations with friends.

In unseren Gesprächen haben wir sehr viele Gemeinsamkeiten und gemeinsame Interessen gefunden. Wir haben über Möglichkeiten der Zusammenarbeit gesprochen und Ideen ausgetauscht, die wir weiter entwickeln werden. Ich freue mich auf die nächsten Gespräche mit Freunden.
